Alicia Chew and Sherlyn Chew

Alicia Chew was born on 272 Ninth Street in Chinatown in 1924. Alicia, along with her daughter Sherlyn, recall many childhood stories of growing up in the neighborhood, and how Lincoln School has remained a centerpiece for Chinatown students through the decades. Alicia believes that Chinatown is in fact "the most important part of Oakland" because of its vibrancy. Alicia has many nicknames including "Happy" named by her parents when she was born as well as "Betty" after the cartoon character "Betty Boop."
