William WongWilliam Wong was born and grew up in Chinatown. He is the youngest child and only son of seven children of Gee Seow Hong and Gee Suey Ting. His parents ran 'The Great China' restaurant in the heart of Chinatown from 1943 to 1961. He attended Oakland public schools and the University of California at Berkeley before becoming a journalist for mainstream newspapers. He is the author of 'Images of America: Oakland’s Chinatown' from which many historic photos on this website are taken. Bill is working on his own oral history project of Chinatown and also has been a community advisor for this project since its inception.
